Are sit-stand desks good for your health?

February 16, 2026 | From the editors

Prolonged sitting is harmful to health. With the rise of sit-stand desks, more and more people are looking for ways to stay more active during their workday. But are these desks actually as good as is generally assumed?

Prolonged sitting can lead to various health problems, including back pain, poor posture, and fatigue. Research shows that our metabolism slows down and the risk of chronic conditions increases when we sit still for too long.

Sit-stand desks offer a solution by allowing for alternation between sitting and standing. This can contribute to better posture, increased energy levels, and even higher productivity. It is important to realize that alternation is key; standing all day is not ideal either.

Start with the 60-30-10 rule: sit 60% of the time, stand 30%, and move 10%. Use a desk riser to easily change positions. Also consider ergonomic chairs or stools that encourage movement.

Sit-stand desks can be a valuable addition to a healthier workplace. By finding the right balance between sitting, standing, and moving, not only can physical health be improved, but also overall job satisfaction.
