Preventing theft of e-bike batteries

April 14, 2026 | From the editors

The theft of e-bikes and their batteries has increased significantly in recent years. In 2020, there was a whopping 74% increase in reported thefts, with more than 22.000 cases annually. This problem affects not only cyclists but also companies and institutions that provide e-bikes. It is important to take measures to prevent theft, especially when it concerns valuable batteries.

Therefore, five effective tips to prevent employees from having to walk home after their visit:

Double security: use both a frame lock and a chain lock. This makes it harder for thieves to get away with an e-bike. Choose locks with an ART-2 certification or higher, as these are more resistant to common burglary methods.

– Photo documentation: Take clear photos of the frame number, make and model of the e-bike, and the battery. This will help with the reporting process and increase the chance of a refund in case of theft.

– Remove the battery: Always take the battery with you when leaving an e-bike unattended. This reduces the risk of theft, as the battery is often a valuable target for thieves.

Secure parking: Park your e-bike in a secure parking facility or indoors, if possible. This offers additional protection. If this isn't possible, ensure it's securely fastened to a sturdy object.

Registration and insurance: Register your e-bike with a theft registry and consider insurance that covers theft. This provides a safety net if your e-bike is stolen.

These tips can significantly reduce the risk of e-bike battery theft. Above all, stay alert and take proactive measures to protect your property.
