Analog or digital walkie-talkie?

February 16, 2026 | From the editors

When choosing a walkie-talkie, it's important to understand whether analog or digital is the best option. Both systems have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the best choice depends on the specific needs of the organization.

Analog radios have been in use for a long time and are popular with both professionals and private individuals. They usually operate within the PMR band (446 MHz) and do not require a license. Analog radios are cheaper than digital models. However, analog radios are vulnerable to eavesdropping and can only support one talkgroup per frequency. This can be a limitation in crowded environments.

Digital walkie-talkies (DMR) offer improved voice quality and eavesdropping protection. They use multiple talk groups per frequency, simplifying communication. Furthermore, digital walkie-talkies can send text messages and are often equipped with features such as GPS and man-down alarm systems, which is particularly useful in high-risk sectors.
