More efficient use of space in the Smart Campus

The budgets for the management of the complexes are under pressure due to rising maintenance and energy costs. At the same time, changes in occupancy numbers, financing, and geopolitical uncertainties continue to influence the strategic direction. With a Smart campus Significant cost savings are possible by utilizing existing space more efficiently. How does that work?

Drawing on his PhD research and more than 10 years of work experience in a real estate department, Bart Valks addresses the problem of more efficient space utilization with the Smart campus as a solution. Based on his scientific and practical experience, he discovered that although many recognized the potential of the Smart campus see, but organizations still struggle to take steps to use their spaces truly more efficiently. In this presentation, he highlights a number of concrete aspects that are important for increasing space utilization:

– What is efficient use of space and how is it measured? The definitions of occupancy and utilization are introduced, and various measurement methods are discussed.

– How to increase the shared use of spaces within the portfolio? Real-time Data can help with this, but facilities also play an important role.

– What is the role of behavior in efficient space utilization? The use of real time data must go hand in hand with a change in behavior. This applies at all levels: in daily use, in scheduling processes, and in long-term plans for accommodation.

– What is the business case of efficient space utilization and how to get started? Insight is provided into how a business case to build with data on occupancy and utilization, and to start collecting this data as soon as possible.
