E-bike charging stations: safety and theft prevention

February 28, 2026 | From the editors

With the growing popularity of e-bikes, the number of charging stations in the Netherlands has also increased significantly. Many of these charging stations are located at bicycle parking facilities. This not only poses problems with theft but also significant fire risks. In 2023, no fewer than 9.000 e-bike batteries were stolen, and fires caused by defective batteries occur daily, leading to more than 500 fire incidents annually.

The solution seems obvious: charge indoors, but not in the workplace. This prevents fire hazards and theft, but it does require a well-considered approach. One promising option is e-bike charging lockers, such as those from ChargeHyve. These lockers offer a safe, fire-resistant solution for charging e-bike batteries.

The ChargeHyve lockers are equipped with fire-resistant materials and advanced sensors for early fire detection. This ensures employees can charge their batteries worry-free. Furthermore, the lockers are equipped with a smart locking mechanism, effectively preventing theft of batteries and chargers.

By centrally managing e-bike chargers in a secure environment, companies can not only ensure the safety of their employees but also contribute to more sustainable commuting. Using such solutions is a step toward a future that maximizes the benefits of electric transportation, without the risks currently associated with it.
