The importance of security in public spaces

February 4, 2025 | From the editors

At a time when the openness of city centers and public transportation systems is attracting more and more users, the need for security in these locations is paramount. The open nature of these spaces offers numerous advantages, but also presents challenges, such as graffiti, fare dodgers, vandalism, and the presence of loitering youth. How adequate security can offer a solution to facility managers.

Investing in adequate security, both in terms of personnel and technological solutions, creates a safe and pleasant environment for passengers, staff, and retailers alike. This not only improves the experience but also contributes to a positive image of the locations involved.

There are several options to achieve adequate security:

  • The presence of security personnel can act as a deterrent to potential criminals. Staff must be well-trained in handling various situations, including conflict resolution and passenger support.
  • The use of modern technologies, such as CCTV cameras, alarm systems, and access control, can significantly improve security. These systems not only help monitor suspicious activity but can also be a valuable tool in incident investigations. The benefits of technology include real-time monitoring of high-traffic areas; automatic notifications of suspicious activity; and an increased chance of solving crimes through evidence gathering.
  • Facility managers can collaborate closely with local police and municipal services. This collaboration will lead to improved security strategies and the sharing of information about potential threats.
