Preventing Legionella contamination is better than fighting it

Preventing Legionella in drinking water systems is important for public health. Legionella is a dangerous bacterium that can cause serious lung infections. Therefore, it is better to prevent Legionella than to treat it. An effective solution is the use of chlorine dioxide (ClO2).

Chlorine dioxide is a powerful chemical compound widely used for disinfection. It is particularly effective at combating Legionella bacteria and other microorganisms in water. What makes chlorine dioxide unique is its ability to work even in stagnant water, such as in the dead spots of pipes. This is important, as Legionella often nests in these areas.

Chlorine dioxide has strong oxidizing properties. It oxidizes organic material, including biofilm, the ideal breeding ground for Legionella. By removing biofilm, the bacteria have no chance to multiply. In other words: no biofilm = no Legionella.

Another advantage of chlorine dioxide is its environmental friendliness. It breaks down into harmless byproducts and leaves no harmful residues. At a minimum dosage of 0,2 mg/l, it is safe for humans and animals. This makes chlorine dioxide an excellent choice for both priority and non-priority buildings.

The use of chlorine dioxide in drinking water systems offers an effective and sustainable solution for preventing Legionella. By controlling biofilm formation, the health risks of this dangerous bacterium can be significantly reduced. Prevention is better than cure, and chlorine dioxide is a reliable ally in this regard.
