The assignment was to design the outdoor space of the new company building, whereby a balance had to be found between the client's wishes and the guidelines of the Medel Visual Quality Plan and the BREEAM requirements for sustainability.
A green, functional, and representative outdoor space was developed for staff and customers. This was supported by a site development plan, planting plan, and an ecological amenity plan, ensuring compliance with all guidelines.
Clever spatial decisions resolved apparent contradictions. The client wanted a fixed number of parking spaces, while 50% green space was mandatory. Through the creative use of space, materials, and plantings, sufficient green space was created, giving the site a park-like appearance.
The site also promotes biodiversity and meets two BREEAM-NL criteria. Based on the five Rs (food, safety, moisture, variety/connection, and reproduction), it attracts diverse species, such as birds, insects, and small mammals. Native plants, hedgerows, trees, grasslands, nest boxes, and insect hotels enhance the ecological value.
